Halloween Party

Want to win Mummy of the year? Then, consider throwing your kids a Halloween party for all of their closest ghoul-friends and boo-friends. We had Halloween games, treats galore, a spooktacular dance party, and we capped things off with a Halloween movie. What better way to count down to Halloween!

For our party, we told all of our little pumpkins to wear their favorite Halloween Pyjamas. Our kids were dressed in glow-in-the-dark skeleton, mummy and ghost jammies that we picked up from Old Navy. Every year we pick up Halloween sleepwear from Old Navy in late September/early October, and the kids lounge around in them all month long for a coordinated head to toe look. Pop on a pair of Hunter Boots, and they are good to go! As the kids grow out of their pj’s, they get passed down the line to little Oxford. They are so comfy, and they are fun to pull out year after year as they really are timeless.

Decorations:

Our guests were greeted by our gigantic inflatable Beetlejuice Sand Worm, which set the tone for what was sure to be a fa-boo-lous party. We had Mr. Bones, our plastic skeleton dressed to impress my husbands trucker hat sitting out front on our porch, as well as our sparkly plastic spider also from the local dollar store crawling about. We had pumpkins cascading down the front steps with a purple, white and yellow Mums alternating between for a pop of color. We hung witch hats from the ceiling of the main entrance for a real show stopper, and a Halloween Wreath on the door. We strung orange lights around our tree and hung handmade ghosts that we made from Styrofoam balls covered in sheer fabric for a ghostly vibe. The final touch on our outdoor decorations were the black lanterns that we purchased at IKEA and tied with skeleton embellished ribbons.

Inside, we had our Philips LED Smart lights set to orange to create a pumpkin glow in our kitchen and tie in with our outdoor lighting. I made paper bats to stick on the walls that I cut out using our Cricut machine. I folded the wings so they looked as through they were flying. I decorated my table with a reusable Skelton tablecloth from Dollarama, and lined the table with terracotta pumpkin tea lights from Michaels Arts & Crafts Store. The black Skeleton glass cups were from Pottery Barn and tied together perfectly with the tablecloth. The trick or treat garland that was hanging from the kitchen island was from Pottery barn.

I made a letter board that said “Creep It Real” and placed it next to my Bride & Groom skeletons that were from Michael’s Arts & Crafts store. I get a lot of my seasonal decorations from Michael’s as they really do have some one-of-a-kind pieces, and they help get me in the spirit of Halloween midway through the summer every year. One of our family traditions is to decorate a Halloween tree inside as well. I picked up this light up Birch Tree from Restoration Hardware, and most of the ornaments were hand made.

Games:

Mummy Wrap: We played Wrap the Mummy with rolls of toilet paper. The kids were divided into 5 teams, and the challenge was to see who could wrap the Mummy the fastest. The first team to run out of toilet paper wins.

Bobbing for Apples: For no other reason than tradition, we play a good old fashion game of bobbing for apples. The kids wore smocks to protect their outfits, and they had a grand old time bobbing for apples. For a more updated version of this game and to prevent the spread of germs, we had three separate bucks and teams of three competed to see who could pick up their apples the quickest using only their mouths. Then, we swapped out the apples and put fresh water in each time.

Meet the Monster: We also had a game of Meet the Monster, where we filled bowls with various food items and covered up the bowls with a large bedsheet or drop cloth. Then we made special signs that said Eyeballs (peeled grapes), Brains (cooked spaghetti), Fingers (small cucumbers), Tongues (Apricots) etc.

Treats:

I put together a dessert table that was eerie-sistible. I made green Witch Finger Cookies which brought back so many childhood memories. Made the fingers out of green sugar cookie dough that I shaped to look like fingers. The knuckles were made using a toothpick. I used Red Wilton Sparkle Gel to stick on the almond fingernails. I pressed the nails into the cookie as soon as the cookies came out of the oven when they were still warm.

I made a Vanilla Cake with Pink Buttercream icing. I iced the cake with a crumb coat first, and then chilled the cake before adding an additional coat of frosting. I used my Lazy Susan to help make the frosting extra smooth. Alternatively, you can use a Cake Turner which is available on Amazon. The ghosts were hand drawn onto card stock and the attached them to the cake using silver floral wire that the curled to make them seem like they were floating above.

I made Chocolate Pudding Cups with Oreo Cookie Crumbs onto top and candy corn pumpkins to look like a pumpkin patch. I used Green Wilton Sparkle Gel to pipe the pumpkin vines. I used the same plastic dessert cups to make the orange jello in. I made them into jack-o-lanterns by using a Black Sharpie on the outside of the cups.

I can’t forget to mention the chocolate ghost Popsicle’s that I made. I melted white chocolate Candy Melts. I then peeled and halved a bunch bananas. I dipped the Popsicle sticks first in white chocolate and then into the base of the bananas, being careful not to poke through the sides or the tops. From there I dipped the bananas into the warm chocolate. Finally, I used dark chocolate chips for the eyes. To set the bananas, I placed them in the freezer overnight.

Finally, I made ghost cups out of white plastic cups that I drew eyes and mounted on. I used these to make Ghoul Drool Shakes (ice-cream, eggnog, green food color) and topped them off with Whipping Cream and black and white striped straws.

The desserts were placed on adorable plastic Candy Corn platters that I purchased from the dollar store. I also made little witches brooms out of foam sheets that I cut into strips and wrapped around straws. I got glued them and wrapped silver floral wire to hold them together. I made another letter board for the dessert table that said “100 Percent That Witch” and used my Cricut to cut out a detailed witch silhouette to add below. I also made the garlands using pastel colors in soft pink and orange sherbet to switch things up a bit from the traditional black and oranges we’re used to seeing at this time of year. Finally, we had a Fortune Teller Witch on the table, which the kids were enthralled with.

No party would be complete without a festival Halloween movie to get the kids in the spirit. This year we had guests of many ages, so we opted for a not-so-scary movie to accommodate our youngest guests. We went with The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown.
