Halloween Sugar Cookies

Halloween, the season that celebrates imagination, creativity, and playful spirit. People of all ages and pets alike transform into their favorite characters, and neighborhoods come alive with ghostly gore and zombie vibes. The thrill of haunted houses, pumpkin carvings, spooky tales, frightful flicks, tricks and treats. There is no other season quite as alluring.

For the D’Silva family, Halloween is our undisputed favorite holiday. In fact, it’s one of the few things that we can all agree upon. We love all things Halloween, and enjoy taking part in every aspect of this spooky season, from Halloween PJ’s to Pumpkin Carvings, to Halloween Movies and Books, to Homemade Costumes, Ghost Walks, and so much more, our preparations begin way back in July. We call it Summer-ween! One of my all time favorite parts of Halloween is baking. I love spoiling my kiddos with all kinds of Halloween goodies to get them into the spirit, and my husband and I also enjoy indulging along the way too.

This Halloween Sugar Cookie recipe is fun for the whole family. It’s also the perfect make-ahead recipe for a Halloween Cookie Decorating party. I can’t think of a better way to get your Halloween on, and trick or treat yo self. These cookies are truly to die for. Happy Halloween Baking!!!

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 Cups All Purpose Flour

  • 1/2 Tsp. Salt

  • 3/4 Cup (1 1/2 Sticks) Unsalted Butter (Room Temperature)

  • 1 Cup Sugar

  • 1 Egg

  • 1 1/2 Tsp. Vanilla Extract

Directions

  • Sift together flour and salt over a small bowl, and set aside.
  • In the bowl of an electric beater, beat the butter on high until creamy (about 2 minutes).
  • Reduce the speed to medium and slowly add the sugar. Beat for an additional 2 minutes or so, until light and fluffy, occasionally stopping to scrape down the sides of the bowl with a spatula.
  • Add the egg and the vanilla and continue to beat for another minute.
  • Stop the mixer and add half the flour mixture. Beat on low speed until most of the flour has been absorbed. Add the remaining flour and continue beating until all of the flour has been absorbed and the dough starts to pull away from the sides.
  • Divide the dough in 2 equal parts and shape into disks. Wrap each disk in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
  • Remove the dough from the refrigerator and let it stand for 5 minutes or so.
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).
  • Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface 1/4 inch thick. Using Halloween cookie-cutters, cut out various shapes. Transfer the cookies to the prepared baking sheets, placing them 1 inch apart.
  • Bake the cookies until golden brown around the edges, 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Transfer the cookies to wire racks and let cool completely. Decorate as desired. See my Royal Icing Recipe, click here.
