Addams Family Halloween Costume

“They’re Creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky,” Andrew Gold.

In the realm of pop culture, few families are as iconic or eccentric as The Addams Family. With their deeply disturbing sensibilities, and obsession for all things dark and eerie, the Addams have been a beloved part of American entertainment for decades. From the classic television series of the 1960s to hit movies of the 1990’s, they returned to the big screen once again in their 2019 animated film “The Addams Family,” directed by Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan, capturing the attention of a whole new generation.

More recently, Wednesday Addams has made a triumphant return once again for our family, with the recent Netflix reboot and spinoff of The Addams Family. Jenna Ortega, who plays Wednesday Addams, has become a TikTok sensation with her particular dance sequence. Now, my eldest daughter has been working away on learning the Wednesday Addams song (a rendition of the 2011 Lady Gaga song, Bloody Mary) on piano, while my little in the middle, Story, has been perfecting her dance moves. They’ve been dance, dance, dancing with their hands everywhere we go!

It’s no wonder that our family decided to creep it real a couple a few years ago, and pay tribute to the Addams Family for our annual D’Silva Family Halloween Portrait. The hardest part was trying not to smile.

Here’s how we made our Addams Family Halloween Portrait:

It all started with a larger than life wall mural featuring a couple of our beloved characters from the new animated Addams Family movie. We wanted to bring Uncle Fester and Lurch into our family picture, but we are a family of five so we had to get creative. These characters were made using large poster board that I taped together. I hand drew the characters as best I could and coloured them in with none other than pencil crayon. When I cut them out and mounted them on the wall. They added a perfect backdrop for our photoshoot.

For our costumes, I first shopped our closets for anything I could find to give a streetwear, one-of-kind, curated vibe to these costumes. I also embellished our looks with items that I picked up at Spirit Halloween, Dollarama and Zara. We purchased Wednesday’s Axe from Dollarama and her broken doll from Spirit Halloween. River was Cousin Itt, which we pulled together from a long blond wig, black flower glasses and top hat that we ordered on Amazon. Story and Oxford’s Wednesday and Pugsley’s outfits were from Zara, which I loved because they were able to wear them beyond Halloween. This is a pro tip to anyone wanting to save on Halloween costumes, which can be expensive.

I found my Morticia dress online, and my husbands Gomez suit was actually his wedding tux (I had to take a deep breath for this one) that he’d almost grown out of, and a pair of skinny jeans that he had in his closet for some time. The red tie was passed down from my Dad, funny enough. His moustache was 100% real, but you can also pick one up at Dollarama! Oh, and we can’t forget about Thing, who made an appearance in a few of the pictures as well. We picked up this rubber hand from the local Dollarama.

I was truly delighted with how these pictures turned out. They will be a nice keepsake for sure, and it’s always fun to look back at how the kids have grown and changed. I hope I’ve convinced you to transform your house into a museum, where people can come and see’em; Your Family (aka, The Addams Family!). Altogether, things were pretty ooky around here, with The D’Silva Family!
