Beetlejuice Pillows

Tim Burton’s 1980’s film Beetlejuice is a cult classic, and one of his most iconic creations. The film starts off with a deceased couple, Adam and Barbara, who are navigating the afterlife. Michael Keaton brilliantly plays the character Beetlejuice, and Lydia is played by none other than the magnificent Winona Ryder. The cast also includes Geena Davis, Alec Baldwin, and Catherine O’hara to name just a few. This timeless masterpiece is the perfect blend of dark humor, eccentric characters, and stunning visuals. This film continues to be a beloved classic, and Tim Burton is a true creative genius.

I grew up watching Beetlejuice, and to say it has been a personal favorite of mine since as long as I can remember is a massive understatement. I absolutely LOVED it and watched it over and over again, particularly around Halloween. In fact, we even had it on VHS way back when. My favorite part of the movie has always been the scene where Lydia and her family are seated around the dining table and break out into song, singing the legendary song “Day-o”. I also love the scene at the end of the movie where Lydia floats up the staircase and sings “Jump in the line”. Clearly, the musical choices really resonated with me and to this day I rejoice in singing along to the soundtrack. Oh, and I can’t forget the scene where Beetlejuice appears in the graveyard for the first time. So much nostalgia wrapped up in one film.

I have now passed on my love of all things Tim Burton to my kids. We even did Tim Burton themed family costumes for Halloween one year, which included Lydia as well as some of our favorites from other Tim Burton classics, such as Edward Scissor Hands, Corpse Bride and Nightmare Before Christmas. We invested in the most amazing inflatable Beetlejuice Sandworm for our front lawn, that is part of our annual Halloween decor. We hope to continue to celebrate Tim Burton, and to expand our Beetlejuice collection of decor pieces.

A couple of years ago, I had the idea of making hand painted, Beetlejuice throw cushions for our living room couch. I had seen nothing like them in stores at the time, so I thought it would be a fun way of bringing Beetlejuice into our home at Halloween. So, I picked up some inexpensive cushions and covers from IKEA, and went to work. I found the most amazing cartoon images of the characters on Google Images. Then, I used Graphite as well as White Transfer Paper and a Fine Tip Embossing Tool to trace the images onto the fabric. Using Acrylic paint I filled in color between the lines and brought the characters to life. I outlined them with a black Sharpie, and used a clear, waterproof spray sealer to protect the paint. These cushions are super quick and easy to make and won’t break your bank. They truly make me smile year after year, and I can’t wait to bring them out again and get decorating for Halloween.

So, there you have it! I hope I’ve inspired you to create Beetlejuice cushions for your home too, and incorporate as much Tim Burton into your Halloween decor as possible. I am counting down the days until Halloween, and I can’t wait for our annual Halloween movie night where we will definitely be curling up on our couch with our hand painted cushions and watching our all time favorite classic, Beetlejuice.
