Space Party
It was the Spring of 2020 and the whole world was turned upside down with news of the Pandemic. Restrictions were put in place limiting gatherings to outdoors, and people were really limiting their interactions to stop the spread of the Covid-19 virus. Our little River turned 6 years old, and we wanted to give her a birthday party that was truly out of this world to help distract her from what was really going on in this world at that time. So, we went to work to put together a Space theme birthday party. She had just recently shown a real interest in all things galaxy related, and she was delighted at the idea of turning our house into an intergalactic wonderland.
Decorations:
Even though the party took place outside with our guests, we still went all out with the decorations on the inside. I hand drew a rocket onto Bristol Poster Board and printed off images planets and stars to hang on the walls.
I made an alien garland out of green card stock that I cut out by hand. I used these same alien heads to decorate the dessert table.
For the kitchen table, I purchased a galaxy tablecloth from Amazon as well as some adorable silver spaceship cups. I also ordered some glow-in-the-dark stars and dispersed them around the table for a fun little detail. The kids helped me transform some paper plates into planets that we added around our kitchen light. They loved being a part of the process.
I also involved the kids by having them help me paint a cardboard spaceship. They had a ball painting away and adding their own colours, and they were so excited to help!
We didn’t forget about decorating the outside for our guests. Most exciting of all were the little mini aliens that I printed and cut out by hand, adjoined them to garden stakes and scattered all throughout our lawn. They greeted all of our guests, and no one could believe that they were handmade. What can I say, we had a lot of time on our hands during the pandemic! We also hung a balloon garland around our front doorstep and made an extraterrestrial Happy Birthday River sign to hang on the porch.
Dessert Table:
We decorated the table with an Astronaut that I had painted onto Foam Core and used as a back splash. I then printed numbers from 6 down to 1 that got smaller and smaller and the letters BLAST OFF! to hang beneath. We picked up the most adorable inflatable Astronaut from Amazon and placed it in the corner for some added height.
Our little River has a big sweet tooth, so we didn’t skimp on the desserts. I made Earth cookies by combining green and blue sugar cookie dough into balls before baking. Then, I made sugar cutout cookies with cookie cutters that I picked up online, and I piped them with royal icing. I also picked up astronaut and alien chocolate molds that I made into chocolate lollipops using candy melts and paper sticks. Because our guests were unable to come into our house at that time, we bundled our cookies into individual reusable plastic containers for them to enjoy at their homes afterwards, which was a nice little take home for them.
I made an extraordinary moon cake with a sphere cake pan. The cake was a vanilla bean cake with buttercream frosting. I used white candy melts to resemble moon craters. I finished it off with a mini American Flag that I stuck to a toothpick, as well as a number 6 candle from Party City online.
Outfits:
River was delighted to be an Astronaut for the day in her costume that we picked up online. We also picked up plush space helmets for her siblings to wear. I made them little rocket packs out of recycled pop bottles that I glued together and stuck NASA logos on. I added red and orange tissue paper streamers for the fire, and made straps out of ribbon. They really had a blast running around and pretending to be Chris Hadfield.
Parade:
River was starry-eyed when we surprised her with a parade. Our guests went all out decorating their cars with space theme balloons and handmade signs. We sat as a family on our porch and watched as the cars trickled down the road honking and cheering. It was quite an emotional feeling to have so much love around us at this unprecedented time and to see so many familiar faces of family and friends that we had been social distancing from. One of our guests even arranged for a Ghost Buster team to show up and celebrate Rivers birthday, which brought her so much joy.
We served pizza UFO’s to our guests for lunch that I made by sticking little alien printables underneath clear cups and placed them in the center of our pizzas. The guests gathered around our garage and sang happy birthday to River. It was such a special day for our 6 year old, and I thank our lucky stars that we found a safe way for us to celebrate the occasion and connect with loved ones. When you wish upon a star, your dreams really do come true.
