Spider-Man Party
Our little superhero celebrated his 4th birthday with a Spider-Man themed party. We knew the day was coming and it was only a matter of time before Oxford would ask us to transform our house into a friendly neighborhood Spider-man theme.
Attire:
The first challenge was deciding which of his 5 slightly different Spider-man costumes to wear on the big day. You can take the kid out of the Spider-Man costume but let’s face it, you can’t take the Spider-Man out of the kid. Oxford practically lives in his Spider-Man Costumes all year long, and we have to peel them off of him to get him into the bath before his slides right back in. So he was delighted when he could show off his Spidey senses and entertain family and friends. His sisters also wanted to dress up for the big occasion. River wore her Spider Gwen costume and Story was Captain America Girl for the day. Perhaps the cutest of all, we dressed up our King Charles Cavalier Spaniel in a Spider-Man costume to match which he was not overly impressed with. Overall, they all had a super duper time playing dress-up, but with great power comes great responsibility.
Decorations:
Red and Blue were the obvious color choices for this party theme, but we aimed for deeper shades of red and blue as well as black and white accents to make for a more elevated look. We transformed our house into a cityscape with boxes of various sizes that I covered with white paper and black cardstock squares that I cut out by hand in different shapes and sizes. Then I made a spectacular balloon arch out of navy blue balloons that I ordered from Amazon. I especially loved the starburst foil balloons that we integrated with the latex balloons of many sizes. We printed a life-sized image of Oxford wearing his Spider-Man costume and hung it upside down to make it seem as though he was swinging from his webs, which was a fun little personal touch. We also embellished the walls and tabletops with spider cutouts that we made with our Cricut machine. A giant inflatable Spider-Man foil balloon was the perfect backdrop for our little superheros to practice all their web-slinging poses.
Table:
In addition to the spider cutouts, we printed black and white comic strips to act as placemats. The blue cups, red napkins and Spider-Man plates were from Amazon, along with the Spider-Man masks at each place setting. We were sure to integrate as many Spider-Man toys as we could find from Oxford’s collection as well. We lined the kitchen table with Spider-Man action figures which we posed on top of colorful comic book images.
Sweet Treats:
Oxford was definitely bitten by some sort of radioactive spider, and now it’s time to eat some cake. I made this two tiered vanilla bean cake with strawberry filling and buttercream frosting. I made black fondant buildings and hand drew a Spider-Man image using edible markers. The cake was topped with fresh blueberries, blackberries and raspberries and a number 4 candle. I added extra detail with the comic book speech bubbles and the Amazing Oxford-Man cake topper.
The sugar cookies were made with a Spider-Man head cookie cutter that I picked up on Amazon and iced with royal icing. The eyes were piped on with white chocolate and dark chocolate ganache for added flavor. I hand drew the spider webs with edible markers.
I also made red and blue Jello cups which were a big hit with the kiddos, and were quick and easy to make.
The party didn’t end there. The kids bundled up and had an epic spider-slinging time shooting Spider webs at one another with silly string while the adults watched with amusement. We decorated silly string bottles with Spider-Man printables that went with our theme.
Thinking of throwing a Spider-man party for your little one? Don’t get caught in a web, and let my ideas inspire you. There’s no stopping you… ‘cause you’re a hero”. You are after all, the Amazing Spider-Man’s Mom.
