Lego Party

Welcome all Master Builders! Our little Oxford just turned 6, and we wanted to throw him the ultimate Lego themed block party to celebrate. We were inspired by our family trip that we took to LegoLand this time last year, as well as in the Lego builds that Oxford and his older sisters have been working away on over the past few years. Brick by brick we put together all the pieces to transform our home into a Lego Wonderland, and our little mini figure was delighted. Here’s how it all came together…

Invitations:

To set the stage, my husband designed the most adorable invitations. We chose a Lego Brick Design in the shape of the number 6 to commemorate Oxford’s 6th birthday. When designing invitations, as a general rule of thumb, we were sure to stick to no more than two, easy-to-read Fonts, which gave them a clean and professional look while still being fun. We did digital invites as well as classic paper invites in which we printed on glossy cardstock and handed them out to Oxford’s little school buddies. We invited 12 kids including 4 of our own, and had 8 adults on hand to help. It was a nice size of party, and very manageable.

Decor:

Once the invites were out, we went to town on the decorations. We decided on a colorful palette of red, blue, yellow, orange and green. We were on a tight budget this year, but didn’t want to skimp on transforming our space and bringing the fun factor. So, we made most of our decorations ourselves out of cardstock and items that we picked up at our local dollar store or that we already had on hand.

We used our Cricut to cut out mini figure silhouettes of various sizes that we used to make a garland, to bedazzle our walls, as well as to sprinkle on countertops to spread the feels all throughout. We made a gigantic Lego Head backdrop out of two pieces of yellow Bristol Board which really created a lot of impact for very low cost. Letters were cut out using the Cricut with the saying “Everything is Awesome!” from the Lego Movie and they were placed up above the Lego Head as part of the backdrop to our dessert table. We made sure to save our boxes from the kids toys this year after Christmas, and wrapped them up in red and blue wrapping paper and cut out circles to make gigantic Lego bricks that we placed on either side of the dessert table. I used wall mounting tape to fix the circles to the boxes to give them a 3 dimensional look.

Similarly, I covered juice boxes with rainbow colored cardstock and stuck circles to them to make colorful Lego Bricks for the table.

Also, using yellow paper cups I glued on Lego faces that I had cut out on my Cricut. Adhesive sticker vinyl would have made this process easier and less tedious than the glue stick method I used. It’s all in the details, and these cups really added to the theme.

I made this Lego Mini Figure display for Oxford as a birthday present as well as a way to incorporate his collection into the party decor. I used an existing IKEA frame that I already had laying around, and purchased a box of Black 2 X 4 Lego bricks from Amazon. I measured and glued the bricks one inch apart using Super Glue. Oxford was so excited to have his characters on full display for all of his friends to see.

We wanted to incorporate some of the wonderful Lego builds that Oxford and his sisters had been working so hard on, so we used Lego flower arrangements in place of real floral bouquets on tabletops, and we decorated our shelves with an assortment of other Lego pieces. We changed out our framed artwork with images of Lego Celebrities that we found online including, Lego Oprah, The Beatles, Wayne’s World, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Finally, we lined our staircase with a colorful array of balloons that we had cascading down.

Food:

To accent the decorations, I went to work on the days leading up to the party preparing Lego themed baked goods. I made chocolate cupcakes with cream cheese frosting and topped them with chocolate Lego Bricks. I made the Lego Bricks using red and blue Candy Melts and a Lego Brick Mold that I picked up on Amazon.

Another tasty treat that I made were the Marshmallow Lego Head Pops. To make the Lego Head shape I used mini marshmallows that I cut in half and stuck to a larger marshmallow base. Then I used large candy sticks and pressed them into the center. The marshmallows were then dunked into yellow candy melts and once solidified, faces were piped on using pre-prepared Wilton Black Sparkle Gel. I ordered these clear cake pop holders from Amazon, which kept them upright and made for a beautiful display.

The party wouldn’t be complete without my infamous iced sugar cookies. I piped royal icing on them, and used mini M&M’s to make them look like Lego Bricks. They were colorful and a cute way to bring in the theme.

Perhaps the biggest hit of all was the Skittles Jello Cups that I prepared according to box directions. There was certainly no shortage of sugar to keep these Lego Builders going.

Last but not least, I made a Vanilla Bean Rainbow Layered Lego Head cake with handmade rolled fondant. After spending all day, layer by layer building this cake I was “surprised” to discover a giant chunk of it was missing the following day. I of course blamed Wilfred, our King Charles Cavalier Spaniel at first only to discover it was Oxford who couldn’t resist. We had some laughs and a few tears were shed, but at the end of the day I made it for Oxford and I guess it was some sort of weird compliment that he couldn’t wait. He assured me that it was delicious! None the less, I went to work re-patching it with leftover fondant I happened to have kept as if I had somehow known Oxford would do this. I have to say, it’s not the prettiest cake I’ve ever made but it was made with lots of love, and I guess that all that really matters.

Activities:

With 12 little Master Lego Builders on our hands we wanted to keep the party guests entertained. We knew we needed to incorporate Lego somehow, so we ordered individual Lego Animals that we put at each place setting, and the kids had fun putting together the pieces and having their own unique animal Lego figures to take home with them. In addition, I printed out Lego Characters for the kids to color and design their own Lego Mini Figures with crayons, which was a big hit.

After pizza and dessert, we played games to burn off all of that sugar. We did balloon toss, Pass the Lego Man and Freeze Dance. Jeff made his own Lego themed ”Everything is Oxford” song for the kids to dance to, which made Oxford giggle. I’m still not sure whether any of the other kids noticed the custom lyrics, but it was a bit hit with the rest of us and well worth the effort. Finally, more sugar was distributed when the kids had a good old fashioned game of piñata. We picked up this adorable Lego Themed piñata from Party City. Then we put on the Lego movie for the kids to watch until their parents came to pick them up.

Lootbags:

I found the most adorable Lego Gummies at the local Dollarama. They were shaped like Lego figures and had fun little gummy hairstyles that you could switch out. The only trouble was that the packaging was a bit disappointing. So, I went to work repackaging them into clear, reusable containers that I also picked up at Dollarama. I had my husband design custom Labels to place on top. I was really happy with how they turned out, and the kids were super excited to Le-Go home with them.

We had so much fun celebrating Oxford’s 6th birthday surrounded by all things Lego. What a wonderful day it was, and everything was truly awesome!
