Hip Hop Party
It’s the 50th Anniversary of Hip Hop and I know many of you will be planning to celebrate! I wanted to share some ideas you could use to make your party 2 legit! When my son Oxford turned two years old he wanted to kick it old school with his homies (his two older sisters). So this is the story all about how our house got flipped turned upside down! I’d like to take a minute just sit right there I’ll tell you how to through a party with some real Hip Hop flair (sorry I won’t be rhyming anymore more because you know mo mommy mo problems).
Decorations:
I set the vibe for this party with a giant gold foil chain balloon draping down the staircase and a matching foil “2” balloon. Using glitter card stock that I sourced from Michael’s Arts and Crafts store, I traced out the letters LEGIT and placed them underneath the number balloon. As a tribute to Rapper 2 Chainz, I handmade 2 paper chains out of gold card stock strips that I strung together one by one. It was a bit tedious and made me a little “insane in the mom brain” but some bling bling was definitely needed. I ordered a giant inflatable boombox and cell phone from Amazon, as well as fake dollar dollar bills that I scattered around the table, and some Yeezy shades and rubber grills for the kiddos to wear. I made a garland to hang below the dessert table that said “Hip Hop Hooray” out of gold letters that I found at our local dollar store. Finally, I placed two children’s Rap books (RAP ABC and The Story of RAP) on the table which were adorable and the perfect finishing touch to our decor.
Sweet Treats:
I made mini boomboxes out of silver gable boxes that I found at Party City, and I loaded them with 80’s inspired candies. I covered chocolate bars with white paper and glued money on top to look like stacks of moolah. The Beats by Dre headphones were made using Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups that I attached with black fondant rope that I rolled, but you could just as easily use black liquorice. Then I hand piped a “b” on each cup to really create the feel.
I baked sugar cookies in the shape of Adidas kicks and 80’s inspired mixtapes which I labelled with the titles of some of our favourite hip hop jams. I filled mini ice-cream cones with charcoal coloured buttercream frosting that I rolled in edible silver sprinkles to resemble little microphones. I made chocolate cupcakes with cream cheese frosting and decorated them with some of the top Emcees of all time that some real hip hop heads would appreciate (my husband). Last but definitely not least, I made an exact replica of my son’s New York Yankees New Era fitted cap out of vanilla cake covered in fondant. It was so authentic looking that no one could believe it was cake until I cut into it. To make this baseball hat cake I used a round cake pan that I ordered off of Amazon, which gave it a 3-D look.
Play List:
Our hip hop party wouldn’t have been complete with a playlist that made our guests jump jump. With the help of my husband, we put together a fun and unforgettable playlist that kept our tiny beastie brats breakin’ and beat boxing till the break of dawn (6 PM). Can’t stop, won’t stop…ok I’ll stop.
